Global Change Symposium: towards a systemic approach

The XVIII meeting of the (Steering Committee, SC) of the “International Geosphere-Biosphere Program” (IGBP) will take place in Punta Arenas, Chile on January 20-24 2003. This follows from the wills of the IGBP and the Chilean Commission for Research and Technology (CONICYT) in order to promote and encourage the participation of countries like Chile in Global Change Research, particularly through the IGBP programs and projects. An agreement was reached between Dr. Eric Goles (CONICYT’s chairman) and Dr. Guy Brasseur (IGBP’s chairman) early this year after the Climate Research Symposium held in Santiago de Chile in December 2001 (See Simposio de Cambio Climático ) Taking advantage of this event and the visit of distinguished scientists that participate in the IGBP SC, the Chilean Scientific Community, CONICYT and the Chilean Weather Service have decided to organize a new symposium, namely, “Simposio de Cambio Global: Hacia una visión sistémica” in Punta Arenas between January 23-25 2003. Through this event we aim at stimulating multidisciplinary global change studies in this area of the world and at establishing stronger research links between the the Chilean and the International Scientific Communities.
